A graduate’s experience: The transition from university student to full-time employee

06/11/24

Hi! My name is Nilas, and I am a Global Business Graduate at Demant.

At the time of writing this post, I’ve been part of Demant’s graduate program for two months. It has been an exciting time filled with social activities, fascinating introductions to various business areas within Demant, and a steep learning curve. So far, the graduate experience has exceeded my expectations.

Since I completed my studies in the summer of 2024, these two months have also marked my transition from a university student to a full-time employee. Before starting this journey, I had heard from friends and family that it could be challenging and somewhat overwhelming to begin your first full-time position, given that procedures, priorities, structures, and social dynamics are often quite different from what you experience as a student.

Being a part of the graduate program at Demant has made the transition from being a student to a full-time employe very smooth thanks to the extensive support provided to help navigate the changes. I’ve felt genuinely supported by my host manager, rotation manager, graduate manager, and buddy, whose guidance and encouragement have made me feel excited about my first full-time position. This support has also deepened my motivation to continue learning and growing throughout my professional career.

One thing that is truly unique about the graduate programme is the opportunity to explore different aspects of the business through the different rotations you will be having. One of these rotations can be abroad, providing international exposure in one of Demant’s key markets. A great deal of thought has gone into designing these rotations to ensure that, by the end of the program, graduates become valuable assets to Demant. The structured nature and careful planning behind the program were also key factors that made me feel at ease about beginning my professional career here.

Currently, I’m in my first rotation with the Commercial Analytics team, which has been an incredible experience so far. The entire team has been very welcoming. They have helped me understand the company culture, how to manage diverse tasks with changing deadlines, and provided me with regular, comprehensive feedback. Most importantly, they’ve given me time and guidance to learn the various programs and concepts we work with.

A final aspect of the graduate program that has made my transition from student to full-time employee very smooth is the young professional network we joined from day one. I’m very grateful to start my career alongside friendly, driven, and professional graduates from diverse backgrounds. This network allows me to gain insights into different areas of the organization in ways a typical full-time role might not. There have also been several social activities, where we graduates have had the chance to get to know one another, and I’m happy to already consider my fellow graduates as friends.

In summary, the transition from university student to full-time employee through Demant’s graduate program has been everything I could have asked for and more.
